Dustin van der Haar is an Associate Professor in the Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Johannesburg. From humble beginnings in a township south of Johannesburg, Dustin now writes the algorithms that solve problems that matter. He is the recipient of multiple awards and has published articles nationally and internationally in biometric systems for sustainability. His research interests include biometrics, computer vision, and machine learning, and he has collaborated with multiple universities worldwide. His research vision intends on developing methods that empower users and computers to do more and make our world better. From keeping the wrong people out or perfecting your Gwara Gwara, all the way to creating software that makes sure your koesusters are not too brown, and you are putting your recycling in the right place. Dustin believes technology has a place to transform our world and teaches others to do the same.
